Jacques Roumain - fragmentary notes

Jacques Roumain – Les Gouverneurs de la Rosée (1946)
Political context for Haiti – return of the laborers (Main character Manuel , his mane being an allegory of the manual laborers returning from Cuba)  here we have another novel where errancy and exile are explored.
Last chapter “La Fin et le Commencement” is the clear indication that the death of the main character was not a death, but a new beginning:
- Oh Manuel, Manuel, Manuel, pourquoi es-tu mort?
Stylistically, he is a huge influence for Depestre.  Roumain mixes landscapes, music and voodoo rituals.
Opening is also a reference to death: “Nous mourrons tous…” (11)
